Bucks County Sports Commission Welcomes Three Major Sports Tournaments

(Bucks County, PA) The Bucks County Sports Commission, a division of Visit Bucks County, welcomes three major sports tournaments to Bucks County in July. Two softball tournaments and a lacrosse tournament will bring nearly 22,250 participants and spectators to the county, filling area hotels for a total of more than 7,000 room nights.

“The Bucks County Sports Commission is thrilled to host three major events this month. The Young Guns Futures Softball Tournament, Patriot Games Lacrosse Tournament and PONY National Softball Championships will all use Bucks County fields,” said Dawn Counard, sales manager. “Sports tournaments help our local economy by filling hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops throughout the area.”

Sports events have a major impact on tourism throughout the region. In 2012, overall visitor spending in Bucks County brought in $865 million in local economic impact, $116 million in federal, state and local taxes and supported 11,500 jobs.

July 13-14: Young Guns Futures Softball Tournament

The ROCK Young Guns Futures Softball Tournament is expected to host 50 teams from five states during the two-day tournament. More than 750 softball players, ages 14 through 16, will compete in this regional tournament, filling more than 100 area hotel rooms. While this tournament has a regional focus, it attracts many college coaches who come to scout local talent.

“This tournament, held in Bucks County every year, acts as a stepping stone for athletes to take on larger, more national softball tournaments,” said Joseph Garvey, president of Newtown Rock Softball. Garvey, the force behind Bucks County’s robust softball scene, is also responsible for bringing the PONY National Softball Championships to the area.

July 20-21: Patriot Games Lacrosse Tournament

Returning to Bucks County for the sixth consecutive year, the Patriot Games Lacrosse Tournament will attract more than 4,000 lacrosse players, ages 8 through 18, from 216 teams. This boys’ lacrosse tournament will welcome athletes and their families from all over the East Coast and Ontario, Canada. This popular event attracts top club teams looking to test themselves against a diverse field of elite programs from other regions.

“Bucks County is a proven location for this tournament,” said Patriot Games Director Patrick Carney. “It’s easily accessible along the I-95 corridor and our attendees tell us they love coming back, not only for the diversity and quality of the competition, but also because of the county’s beauty and wide variety of things to do.”

The tournament will be held at venues in Pipersville, Kintnersville and New Hope.

July 21-27: PONY National Softball Championships

The week-long 2013 PONY National Softball Championships will be held at 41 fields throughout Lower Bucks County. More than 3,250 softball players from 250 teams ranging in age from 8 to 14 are expected to attend the tournament. On average, the majority of athletes are joined by their family, bringing the total number of attendees to nearly 10,000.

“We’re thrilled to bring the PONY National Softball Championships to Bucks County this year,” said Joseph Garvey. “I was born and raised in Newtown and firmly believe Bucks County is a very special destination. It’s truly an honor to introduce and showcase the area to softball players from all over the US and Canada.”

The PONY Baseball/Softball organization was so impressed with Bucks County they signed a three-year contract for the tournament, keeping it in Bucks County until 2015.
