Perceived as an idyllic refuge from the urban bustle of New York City and Philadelphia, the environs of Bucks County have inspired artists for generations. In the early 20th century, however, as the group of artists now known as the Pennsylvania impressionists settled and painted in the area, industry flourished along the Delaware River, a major thoroughfare for commerce and trade. This lecture explores how artists grappled with the changing environment of Bucks County, as mills, quarries, and railroads transformed the region’s topography. Join Dr. Igoe, who joined the Michener as Curator of American Art in July 2019, for this in-depth discussion.
