“Life is short. Eat dessert first.”- Jaques Torres
Imagine strolling along the Seine in Paris on a cold, crisp morning with a croissant and café au lait in hand. The still warm croissant was just baked and you can imagine it filled with chocolate, almond cream or jam, the perfect beginning to your day.
We can’t promise you the Seine, but we can promise you a fresh baked croissant from Mamie Colette on South State Street in Newtown, PA.
Walking through the doors of Mamie Colette, you are transported to Paris, with its sleek interior designed by a French interior designer. A mural with the Eiffel Tower towers over the display cases of baked delectable's. If you look through the glass you can see co-owner Chef Magali rolling the dough, transforming it into one of her magical croissants.
The dream of business and life partners Chef Magali and Isabelle became a reality when Mamie Colette opened its doors in 2022. Meeting in France in 2006, both women shared their French heritage and a desire to bring a traditional French bakery to the US.
Mamie Colette was named in honor of Chef Magali’s grandmother, Colette. Born in the French Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe, Colette made the journey to Chartres, France to give her seven children an opportunity for a better life. It was her inspiration that guided Chef Magali to become an artisan viennoiserie baker, specializing in hand-made croissants and danishes. When the bakery opened, Chef Magali’s relatives came from France to join the celebration with tears of happiness to honor Mamie Colette, who would have been so proud of her granddaughter.
Everything at Mamie Colette is made from scratch with the finest, natural ingredients including a special butter. The almond croissants are filled with an almond cream layer, making every bite something to savor. Chocolate croissants use only the finest chocolate nestled in the flakiest of doughs. The jam croissant has a strawberry filling that hints of Spring. There are light and creamy cheese danish's made with cream cheese, cranberry pastries, and a favorite Nutella croissant. There are special additions to complement the menu. Along with the sweet, there are savory treats such as ham and cheese and spinach croissants.
The finest ground coffee drinks or teas are also available. Business manager Isabelle also stocks a line of French candies and one-of-a-kind host or treat yourself gifts.
Come in and sit for a spell at their counter, close your eyes and transport yourself to the Seine, if only for a while!
